Buried in the Game Informer Issue 382 cover story, underneath the headline wildlife number, is the detail that turns Leonida's animals from scenery into a system. GTA 6 confirms an animal tracking system with three tiers: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. That is a structure, and structures imply progression. It is also, so far, almost entirely undefined, and the gap between those two facts is where most of the internet has started inventing things.

Here is what is actually confirmed about GTA 6 animal tracking, what the three tiers can reasonably be read to mean, and the long list of things Rockstar has pointedly not described.

What is confirmed

The verified record is short and worth stating precisely:

That is the whole confirmed picture. Our 170 species breakdown covers the count in detail and our marine life piece covers the underwater half.

Reading the three tiers

The useful thing about the tier names is that they are not synonyms. They describe different kinds of difficulty, which suggests the system is sorting animals by more than rarity alone.

Discoverable is the baseline. It implies the animal is findable if you go where it lives and look. This is almost certainly the bulk of the 170-plus: most of the 60-plus bird types, the common reptiles, the fish. The verb is doing the work here. Discovery suggests encountering, not hunting.

Rare implies a spawn condition. Something has to be true for the animal to be there: a specific region, a time of day, a weather state. GTA 6's confirmed systems give that reading real weight, because weather is now localised and persistent rather than one global state, with different conditions running simultaneously across the map. A rare bird that only appears in Grassrivers after rain is a trivially easy thing to build on top of that, and a genuinely new kind of collectible for the series.

Legendary is the loaded one, because the word carries baggage from Red Dead Redemption 2, where Legendary animals were unique, named, one-per-save hunting targets wired into a crafting economy. Rockstar has not said that is what Legendary means here. It has not said how many there are, whether they are unique individuals or unusual specimens, or whether they are tied to anything at all.

The RDR2 trap

This is the single most important thing to get right, and most coverage has got it wrong by omission.

RDR2 shipped roughly 200 species with 16 Legendary animals, and wrapped them in a full hunting, skinning, crafting, cooking and compendium economy. GTA 6 has a comparable species count and no announced systems around it whatsoever. Our wildlife versus RDR2 comparison goes through the differences properly.

Specifically, none of the following is confirmed in GTA 6: hunting, fishing as it relates to the log, skinning, crafting, cooking, or any reward for completing the tracking log beyond the log itself. Confirmed water content remains swimming, diving, scuba, jet skis, fanboats, canoes and boats. Nothing about weapons pointed at animals.

The honest reading is that tracking may be closer to a naturalist's checklist than a hunter's. A log you fill by finding and identifying things. That would be a new idea for GTA rather than a port of an old one, and it fits a game that has also confirmed zoo visits, kayaking and scuba diving as side activities.

How this probably intersects with the map

The six confirmed regions give the system somewhere to put its tiers: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. That spread covers urban, reef, swamp, industrial, inland and upland habitats, which is a lot of distinct ecological niches for a game that has committed to 60-plus bird types.

The confirmed activities that put you in those places without a mission attached are the ones to watch: kayaking, scuba diving, air boating, jet skiing and hiking. None of them has been described as feeding the tracking log. All of them are the obvious delivery mechanism if it does.

What Rockstar has not said

Worth listing plainly, because every one of these has been asserted somewhere as fact:

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three animal tiers in GTA 6?

Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Rockstar has confirmed the three tiers exist but has not defined any of them or said how animals are assigned.

How many animals are in GTA 6?

Over 170 species, including 60-plus bird types and 30-plus land mammals, with fish and reptiles also included but not individually counted.

Is there hunting in GTA 6?

Not confirmed. Rockstar has announced no hunting, skinning, crafting or cooking systems. The tracking system has been confirmed, but nothing connecting it to hunting has been.

Are there Legendary animals like in Red Dead Redemption 2?

The word Legendary is confirmed as a tier name. Nothing else about it is. RDR2's 16 named Legendary animals sat inside a crafting economy that GTA 6 has not announced in any form, so do not assume the systems match.

The Bottom Line

The tracking system is the most interesting underdescribed feature in GTA 6 right now, because the tier names are specific enough to be deliberate and vague enough to go either way. A three-tier log across 170-plus species, sitting on top of localised persistent weather and six genuinely different habitats, is the skeleton of something RDR2 never quite had: a reason to go into the wilderness without a gun. Whether Rockstar builds anything on that skeleton is unannounced. Treat Legendary as a word, not a mechanic, until the studio says otherwise.
