Most of what people notice about GTA 6 graphics is faces, hair and light. The thing that will actually decide whether Leonida looks real is water. This is a game whose centrepiece is a coastal city, whose regions include an island chain and a wetland, and where a huge share of screen time will have some ocean, canal, pool, swamp or rain-slicked road in frame. Water is also, by a wide margin, the most computationally awkward surface in real-time rendering.

Rockstar has confirmed ray-traced global illumination, ray-traced reflections, strand-based hair physics, dynamic clothing and long draw distances. It has published nothing specific about water rendering, wave simulation or buoyancy. What follows explains why the confirmed features matter enormously for water anyway, and what would count as evidence on Thursday.

Why Water Is Genuinely Hard

A water surface has to solve four separate problems at once, and games usually cheat at least two of them.

Reflection. Water reflects the sky, the shoreline, boats, buildings and light sources. Most games use screen-space reflections, which can only reflect things already visible on screen. That produces the classic artefact where a boat's reflection vanishes the moment the boat leaves the frame, or a skyline reflection cuts off at the edge of the display. In a game about a waterfront city, that failure is constantly visible.

Refraction and depth. Light bends entering water and scatters through it, so shallow water should read differently from deep, and the seabed should fade rather than clip.

Motion. Real water is a spectrum of overlapping wave frequencies, from long ocean swell down to capillary ripples. Cheap water uses a scrolling normal map, which looks fine in a screenshot and wrong the moment you stand still and watch it.

Interaction. Wakes, foam, splashes, rain impact, and shorelines where waves break on specific geometry rather than fading into it.

What Ray-Traced Reflections Actually Fix

This is the confirmed piece, and it is the one that matters most for water.

Ray-traced reflections trace rays against the actual scene rather than against what is on screen. On a water surface that removes the single biggest tell in modern game oceans: the reflection is no longer an approximation of the visible frame, so a neon sign behind the camera can appear in the canal in front of you, and the Vice City skyline stays intact in the bay when you pan away from it.

Ray-traced global illumination helps in a subtler way. Water is a bounce surface. Sunlight hitting the ocean throws light back onto hulls, dock undersides, bridge soffits and the walls of waterfront buildings. In rasterised lighting that bounce is faked with probes and often missing entirely, which is why game harbours frequently look like they were lit in a studio. What Rockstar Has Done Before

GTA V's water was genuinely impressive for 2013. It used a real wave simulation rather than a flat scrolling plane, boats sat in it with convincing buoyancy, and the ocean floor was modelled properly enough to support diving. Its weaknesses were shoreline interaction, which was soft and vague, and reflections, which were screen-space and broke constantly.

RDR2 improved the interaction layer. River currents pushed horses and boats, water displaced around characters wading, mud and wet cloth read correctly, and rain accumulated on surfaces. What it did not have was a large open ocean to sell.

GTA 6 needs both at once, and at a much higher fidelity, on a map roughly 2.4 to 2.7 times the size of GTA 5's with far more coastline. That is the actual technical brief.

The Underrated Part: Wet Surfaces

Water rendering is not only the ocean. Several of the leaked clips drew comment for headlight reflections off wet roads, sign faces and reflective markers during night driving, which is consistent with the confirmed ray-traced reflection support.

This matters because Leonida is Florida, where an afternoon downpour is routine. A believable wet-surface pass means puddles pooling in road camber rather than in a uniform sheet, spray behind tyres, uneven drying, and reflections that survive the camera moving. What to Watch For on August 27

The Extended Look premieres Thursday, August 27 on Netflix at 3:00 p.m. ET, then free on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA VI site at 9:00 p.m. ET. Runtime and contents are still undisclosed. If there is any water footage, four things separate a real upgrade from a good trailer:

  1. Does a reflection survive a camera pan? If the skyline stays in the bay as the camera turns away from it, that is ray tracing doing work.
  2. How does the shoreline behave? Watch where water meets sand or seawall. Breaking waves that respond to specific geometry are much harder than a fading alpha edge.
  3. Is there swell at distance? Flat water at the horizon with detail only near the camera is the classic tell of a limited simulation.
  4. What happens to a wake after the boat passes? Persistence and dissipation are expensive and rarely faked well.

One honest caveat: trailers are captured and often rendered under conditions that do not match live gameplay on retail hardware. Anything shown on Thursday should be treated as a target, with the performance mode question still entirely unanswered.
