This was the week the GTA 6 information drought ended. After 15 months of "when is Trailer 3" and a punishing August of leaks, Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27 and simultaneously opened the doors to a full preview round. More was confirmed in seven days than in the previous two years combined.
Here is everything that mattered between August 24 and August 30, 2026, with the caveats intact.
1. The Extended Look Landed, and It Was Not a Trailer
The 26 minute video premiered on Netflix at 3:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 27, subscribers only, then went free on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA VI site at 9:00 p.m. ET the same day.
Performance numbers from the first 24 hours:
- Number one on Netflix's top ten, where it was listed as a film.
- Analytics cited by Forbes reported Netflix web visitors up around 125 percent and mobile usage up around 50 percent against the platform's previous Thursday.
- Roughly 6.7 million YouTube views by the following morning.
It did not break a 24 hour record. Trailer 2's 475 million views in 24 hours still stands, and comparing the two is not a like for like exercise: the Extended Look ran 26 minutes, was gated behind Netflix for six hours, and hit YouTube overnight for most of the world. TTWO stock rose roughly 2.5 to 2.8 percent pre market on August 28, around $239.50. BTIG reiterated Buy with a $313 target. Read that as the market pricing out leak risk, not as sales data.
2. Rockstar Put a Number on the Map
The single biggest new fact of the week. Rockstar told previewers, and a New York Times report, that Leonida is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area and roughly double GTA 5. Vice City itself is about twice Los Santos, and its metro area around eleven times larger.
That metro figure is the one that matters. It says the extra scale went into density rather than empty highway. Our full analysis is in the map is three times RDR2.
3. Performance: 30 FPS Is Now a Studio Statement
Rob Nelson, co studio head at Rockstar North, confirmed to creator Davy Jones that GTA 6 runs at 30 fps on console. This upgrades what had been an attendee observation into an attributable Rockstar position.
Asked directly about a 60 fps performance mode, Nelson said he would need to check with the technical team. So: not confirmed and not ruled out. Do not write either. Precedent is worth remembering, though. GTA 5 and RDR2 both launched at 30 fps and higher frame rates arrived via new versions, not patches. See 30 fps confirmed, 60 fps uncertain.
No PS5 Pro comment was made at any point. The Extended Look was captured on a base PS5.
4. No First Person Mode at Launch
Confirmed by Nelson, with the stated reason being the team's focus on third person animation. First person is retained when aiming certain weapons, so this is not "no first person at all."
Precedent: GTA 5 also shipped without first person in September 2013 and gained it 14 months later with the PS4 and Xbox One version. That is precedent, not a promise. Details in no first person mode at launch.
5. No Microtransactions, No Generative AI
Nelson told Kinda Funny there are no microtransactions in the single player game at launch. Both qualifiers matter, and Rockstar explicitly declined to discuss the next iteration of GTA Online when asked. Never extend the single player answer to online.
Separately, Nelson confirmed no generative AI was used in development, a position Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick echoed. The 600,000 plus hand authored NPC animations figure backs it up. Covered in no microtransactions, no generative AI.
6. Original In Game Television Is Real, and Some of It Was Filmed in RDR2
Rockstar produced hours of original in game television, reportedly with an external animation studio across multiple episodes, including an adult animated sitcom and some live action material.
The week's best detail: the "Chacey's" commercial in the Extended Look, an Arby's parody involving a sandwich made of animals, was filmed inside Red Dead Redemption 2. Spotted by Kotaku's Zack Zwiezen on August 28, with the exact RDR2 location identified by Reddit users. Arby's own account posted about it. Rockstar has been doing this since GTA IV. More in original TV shows confirmed.
7. Music and Activities Filled In
Outlet trackers counted around 14 new songs in the Extended Look, taking the confirmed total across all three videos to roughly 20 or 21. The range spans five decades: Tom Petty, Phil Collins, The Pointer Sisters and Tammy Wynette alongside Tate McRae, The Weeknd and Sexyy Red, plus a reported Haitian kompa placement. Rockstar has published no tracklist. See every confirmed song so far.
Side activities got their first real list too: pool, mini golf, basketball, kayaking, scuba diving, fan boats, base jumping, street and dirt bike racing, track races, car meets, and a visitable zoo where you can study the animals. Breakdown in confirmed side activities.
8. Rockstar Broke Its Silence on the Leaks
On August 26, ahead of the reveal, Rockstar issued a statement calling the leak situation "heartbreaking" for the development team, urging players to wait for official footage, and describing the game as nearly there. The November 19, 2026 date was reaffirmed and is unchanged.
GamesRadar reports the Cyberleek leak flood appears to have ended, characterising it as roughly a $250,000 crypto grift. Take Two's DMCA subpoenas against X and Google name the handles CyberLeeks, Surfer24k and CyberLeekario. The response deadline is September 4, five days out.
9. The Loud Silence: GTA Online
Forbes' Paul Tassi wrote on August 29 about the most conspicuous gap in the whole campaign. Rockstar has said nothing about the next GTA Online: no name, no window, no structure. In a week where the studio confirmed frame rates and mini golf, that is a deliberate omission, not an oversight.
Also still unannounced: any PC version, any review embargo date, chapter count, and the full radio station lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was the Extended Look officially a gameplay trailer?
Rockstar never used the words "gameplay" or "trailer" in announcing it. In practice it contained extensive gameplay footage, but the official title was always "An Extended Look."
Did anything this week change the release date?
No. November 19, 2026 was reaffirmed in Rockstar's August 26 statement and again throughout the preview round.
Is GTA 6 confirmed to be 30 fps with no 60 fps option?
It is confirmed at 30 fps on console. A 60 fps performance mode is neither confirmed nor ruled out. Rockstar has not committed either way.
What is the next scheduled GTA 6 event?
Nothing is scheduled. The next fixed date on the calendar is the September 4 subpoena response deadline, which is a legal matter rather than a game event. A launch trailer and review embargo are the remaining expected marketing beats.
The Bottom Line
The campaign's turning point week. Rockstar answered the frame rate question, the first person question, the microtransaction question and the map size question in the space of a few days, and did it through a named developer rather than a press release. What it pointedly did not answer is anything at all about GTA Online. With 81 days to go, that silence is now the loudest thing on the board.
